Vice President, Engineering - Alpha Natural Resources
June 2016 – November 2018
  • Responsible for all technical services for the enterprise with over $1 billion annual revenue.
  • Directly reported to the COO, in order to execute the company strategy and vision for growth.
  • Led permitting and design team to achieve over $10 million in surety bond reductions, 5 major new mining permits, 3 new mine startups, while also enhancing the pipeline of future projects.
  • Designed and gained approval from CEO and Board of Directors to construct a $30 million underground mine project.  Developed project specifications, conducted bid meetings, awarded contract and executed project.  Including 3000 stph material handling system, 4000’ mine slope, 2 ventilation shafts and ancillary infrastructure.   

Vice President, Engineering Methods & Standards - Alpha Natural Resources
September 2012 – June 2016
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of over 200 idle mine sites.
  • Acted as Project Manager for +$70 MM coal mine expansion including 6000 stph raw coal handling facilities and 5000’ mine slope.
  • Managed a team of engineers and scientists to provide shared technical services to over 100 company coal mines.  Team includes: Geologist, Geotechnical, Ventilation, Mechanical, Electrical, Long Hole Drill, Mine Planning and Drafting specialists.
  • Developed a detailed plan to achieve company vision to transform engineering department from people centric to process centric function.  Organized and sponsored teams of stakeholders to create, document, and teach processes to field engineering staff.
  • Led corporate wide process improvement efforts to increase effectiveness of engineering function, reduce duplication of efforts, and achieve improved outcomes.
  • Managed enterprise coal reserve report submitted to SEC.

Vice President Operations, Coal River East Business Unit - Alpha Natural Resources
June 2011 – September 2012
  • Responsible for operations performance for 3 mining complexes producing 8 MM tons per year of high and mid volatile coal. Business unit included 22 underground mines, 2 Surface mines, 4 Preparation plants, over 1700 employees.
  • Directed seven general managers in areas of Underground Mining (3) Surface mining (1) Maintenance (1), Conveyor Belt Systems (1) Preparation (1).  Also had dotted line supervision of safety.
  • Improved safety performance of total reportable incident rate (TRIR) 18% and citations per inspection days reduced 11%, through implementation of Health and Safety Management System including behavior based safety, cultural realignment, and hazard recognition.
  • Productivity increased 25% through a systematic approach of improvement of infrastructure, increased utilization of assets.
  • Supported maintenance and reliability transformation from reactive to planned maintenance activities.

President,  Brooks Run Mining Company, LLC  - Alpha Natural Resources
September 2009 - June 2011,
  • Responsible for overall performance of facility producing 2.5 MM tons per year of steam and high volatile coal. Division consists of two deep mines, surface mine, preparation plant, and batch weigh loadout, over 300 employees.
  • In 2010, the operations were 2% below budgeted cost, exceeded budget volume by 14%, and exceeded budget EBIDTA by 178%.
  • Led and improved a highly successful behavior-based safety process, by empowering hourly employees to become champions of the process, and energizing managers by increasing their understanding of potential benefits of a fully engaged hourly work force.
  • Fostered a culture in which each employee was expected to become a skilled and habitual observer, and everyone believes that it is his responsibility to act on these observations.  In 2010, the 315 employees of Brooks Run completed 11,300 safety observations, a 15% increase over 2009.

Operations Support - Alpha Natural Resources

  • Selected as one of two employees companywide to participate in Management Development Program, reporting directly to Executive VP, Operations
  • Performed data analysis and reported finding directly to senior management, including CEO
  • Collaborated with Sales, Accounting, and Optimization personnel to gain understanding of company systems and interdependencies
  • Led a Continuous Improvement team to identify opportunities for improvement at Alpha’s mines, then worked with groups of hourly employees to execute improvement projects.  Once projects were in place, then gains were measured to verify results
  • Researched factors affecting diesel fuel efficiency of surface mining operations then developed models to simulate the financial magnitude of these factors.  Prepared and presented these concepts to Executive Officers and Business Unit Presidents.  Then distributed training materials to the mine sites.

Surface Mine Engineer, Brooks Run Mining Company, LLC, - Alpha Natural Resources
May 2007 – July 2008
  • Participated in daily mine inspection to perform short term planning and strategy
  • Worked closely with mine superintendent and foreman to improve coal release, and overburden mining ratio
  • Reviewed mine performance life to date and developed an improved geological mine model
  • Completed an enhanced mine plan and budget
  • Instigated an in pit exploration program, utilizing electronic borehole logging, in order to determine where overburden ratios became unfavorable.
  • Worked with the Corporate Merger and Acquisition department on several potential acquisitions to develop life of mine plans, feasibility studies and discounted cash flow models.

  • Managed an engineering department of eleven employees including surveyors, civil engineer, surface engineer, draftsmen, land agent, environmental technician, administrative assistant
  • Supervised all technical duties for two underground mines and one surface mine, refuse disposal, idle and reclaimed mine sites.
